First Day of Filming

We start filming today in Bexleyheath. We filmed most of the shots needed of the main girl travelling and running back to the man who is waiting on the corner for her. While filming we added in a prop which was a newspaper, this is because the girl sees the article about the man in the paper and it is this action that makes her want to be with him again. When we begin editing the footage we think it will have a whitewashed effect as it is actually the man's imagination.

Location scouting

We have been location scouting recently, The areas we are planning to are:

  • Bexleyheath - as it is a busy local iconic area and an overall great place for Gemma (lead Female) to go shopping with her friends to take her main off her ex - boyfriend Jamie (lead male).

  • Greenwich - The scenes filmed in Greenwich park as it quiet and peaceful around the pond. Perfect for a summer date, and the main viewing area is busy and confusing to rush around when trying to get to a loved one.

We are also going to film the band shots in Woolwich as there is an industrial estate that Gemma found where we are allowed to film. We have chosen as industrial estate as it goes with the bands urban, qwerky, random feel.

Target Audience

The target audience for 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' music video are young adults. Females will listen to the song and watch the music video because of the romantic/ emotional side to the song and maybe wish the band had produced the song about them if they are big fans of 'The Script'. Males could listen and watch the music video because they can relate to being heartbroken and wanting an ex-girlfriend back.
Even though young adults are the main target audience anyone who has had a broken heart can relate to the song and therefore want to watch the music video and listen to the song. So we have taken reception theory into consideration as we have thought about the way the audience will view the video and their emotional response.

Band shots

Band shots are conventional and a very important in a music video. In our music video we will be shot a variety of band shots using different camera angles such as, long and close up shots. The conventional band shot shows the band because it shows the band who have written and recorded the song. We have decided to feature band shots in our music video as i have found they are conventional when a band is creating a music video, plus they will brake up the video to make it more interesting and vary the locations and actors.
But some bands go against the normal convention and play cameos in the music video. The band 'Boys Like Girls' in the music video for 'Lovedrunk' have conventional bands shots as well as playing roles in the video. The image below is a band shot of 'Paramore' performing during their song 'Decode'.

Genre research

The script are of the Alternative Rock genre. The music got its name 'Alterantive rock' as it is an umbrella term for underground music that started from punk-rock. The gerne emerged in the 1980's from the UK and USA, but the gerne didn't become popular until the 1990's. Alternative rock has a lot of subgernes such as grunge, indie rock and Britpop.
To create the conventional Alternative rock sound the music commonly consists of these instruments: a guitar, bass and drums. We will include bands shots with people playing these instruments in our music video, we will apply genre theory to our music video as we have shots of the band performing .
Some iconic bands that come under the Alternative rock gerne are R.E.M, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Oasis.

Cast sheet

Today we created our first draft for our cast list.

The narrative of the song/music video

The song is a love song, so the narrative is easy. We have decided to stay as closely to the lyrics as possble when shooting the music video. To explain the narrative i'm going to use Todorov's narrative theory which includes 5 stages.

1. A state of equilibrium.
The song is about a heartbroken man who wants to reunite with is girlfriend and why doing this he goes back to the place they met hoping to meet her again.

2. A Disruption of that order
There will be shots of the girl out with friends and getting on with her life and not thinking about the man.

3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred
The man has flashbacks of when he was with the girl and they were in a happy relationship. We will use a green screen to create the flashbacks and edit them to black & white to show they are past memories.

4. An attempt to repair the damage
In an attempt to make his wish come true we will show a shot of the man's imagination. The shot will be the girl hearing about the  man waiting on the corner where they met and go running back to him. To show it is the man's imagination we will edit it and give it a whitewash effect.

5. A new equilibrium is made
The man realises it is his imagination. The new equilibrium is now the man knows that it was all his imagination and the girl is leading a happy life without him but he still decides to wait on the corner just in case the girl returns one day.

During Class

Here are some images that were taken during a discussion about the ancillary tasks that we will create. We were also doing some research into locations and getting our presentation ready for our pitch.
